July is Avian Wellness Month

If you own a bird, or have started doing your research before buying a bird, you probably know that their unique anatomy requires a veterinarian with specialized training to bring your feathered friend the best of care. Unlike dogs and cats, birds are not regularly handled in a direct manner, making it easier for symptoms of disease to go undetected until they’re very sick. Avian veterinarians are specially trained in detecting and preventing health problems in birds, while educating bird owners on proper care for their birds. And in since birds are not the most common kind of pet to own, finding a qualified professional that will treat you and your bird with care and compassion isn’t always an easy task. Special techniques including restraint and handling,  as well as knowledge of Avian’s is very important in their care.

Here at Dublin our doctors are part of an organization called Association of Avian Veterinarians. The Association of Avian Veterinarians was established in 1980. The Association membership is comprised of veterinarians from private practice, zoos, universities and industry, as well as allied personnel, technicians and students.  The Association of Avian Veterinarians is an international professional organization of practitioners advancing and promoting avian medicine, stewardship, and conservation through education of its members, the veterinary community and those they serve.

The month of July we are focusing and promoting Avian Wellness Exams.  During this time we are encouraging new pet owners and even those who have stopped in before to have your feathered friend examined by our wonder Veterinarians.   During the exam you and the doctors can discuss behavior, diet, enrichment, as well as potential lab work to make sure everyone is healthy and doing well.   We also will have lots of samples of our Harrison diet as well as recipes for diets that you can make at home for your avian companion.  Call the clinic today to schedule an appointment 719-593-1336.
